Manchester United will “likely” make a formal bid for Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg during the January transfer window, according to Northern Echo.
The local newspaper claims that the Red Devils see the 17-year-old as “the most exciting young domestic talent” available and they are ready to test Sunderland’s resolve with an offer.
Rigg first initially targeted before he signed his first professional contract with the Black Cats in July. However, even though the price of these players is now much more expensive, interest in them remains.
It has been reported that the teenager’s asking price could be as high as £30 million, a huge sum for someone who has made just 40 senior appearances in his career to date.
Rigg attracted a lot of interest
Chelsea, Wolves, Crystal Palace and even Real Madrid are mentioned as other clubs who are keeping tabs on the midfielder.
However, that is Northern Echo claimed that Sunderland had every intention of rejecting all proposals for Rigg in January. However, whether this attitude will persist if they receive a large offer remains to be seen.
United will have limited funds in January
As clubs have to pay attention to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, there are suggestions that the Red Devils will not be very active in the next transfer window.
If Rigg’s rating is as high as has been reported, it could be a challenge for sporting director Dan Ashworth. One way to overcome this is to pay the transfer fee in installments and also include a fairly large additional fee, which will be paid based on performance and form.
It appears that, if United are indeed looking for a new player, Rigg would be the club’s top target.
