Thomas Frank is now a “main contender” to become Manchester United’s next manager if Erik ten Hag is sacked, according to Daily Mail.
The 51-year-old will be in the opposition dressing room when his Brentford side face the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon and that could be an audition venue.
Getting a result against United won’t necessarily make or break Frank’s chances of securing the position but it certainly won’t hurt his prospects.
Frank emerged as one of the leading candidates after one of the favorites, former Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel, decided to take the England job earlier this week.
Who is the favorite to become the next Manchester United manager?
Assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is currently in charge of the team, and many feel that INEOS will put the Dutchman on a caretaker basis if they choose to sack ten Hag midway through the season.
Although state that he will not take another job for a year, former England boss Gareth Southgate also has a fairly slim chance, along with Frank.
Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna and Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick are considered outsiders.
Ten Hag condemned reports of dismissals
Speaking in a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of the Brentford clash, ten Hag criticized the press for making up stories about his sacking:
“The voices come from the media, some of you, not all of you. Some of you create stories, create stories, create fables, make noise, carry lies.”
There was much speculation that ten Hag would be released during the international break but the Dutchman remained in his post. However, he is still under a lot of pressure after a very poor start to the season.
