Manchester United announced on Friday afternoon that Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim will take the reins at Old Trafford.
The 39-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year contract, with the option of an additional year, but he will only start work on November 11.
There were reports that Amorim’s appointment was hampered by two issues; first, a 30 day notice period. Sporting wanted extra compensation to remove him but a compromise was found, with the Red Devils paying an extra €1 million to get him within 10 days.
The second issue concerns the fate of Amorim’s backroom team. They will incur additional compensation costs and no details have been given as to when they could join their manager at Old Trafford. So who are the coaches in question?
Backroom team consisting of 5 people
Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido are two of Amorim’s assistants. The pair have worked with him throughout his managerial career at Casa Pia, Braga and Sporting. Therefore, you might expect United to pay the compensation necessary to bring them to Carrington.
Goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital is someone like that Amorim are also interested in joining him, having worked with the 63-year-old at Braga and Sporting.
Emanuel Ferro (first team coach at Sporting) and sports scientist Paulo Barreira will also be brought in if Amorim is successful.
What is the situation with van Nistelrooy?
Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as caretaker boss following the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday. He was in the dugout during the 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
It has now been confirmed that the Dutchman will stay until Amorim joins, meaning he will take charge of matches against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester. Amorim’s first match was against Ipswich Town after the international break.
